Biography
An early love of photography lead Chris Squires to the film and television industry, where he has worked for nearly 30 years.
He was born in El Salvador, and grew up in such far-flung locales as Morocco, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, India, and Hawaii. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Communications.
Following early projects in San Francisco as a documentary cameraman, he began his career by assisting on such films as THE RIGHT STUFF and OH, GOD. He honed his skills by working on crews with noted cinematographers such as Haskell Wexler, Vilmus Zsigmond, and Caleb Deschanel. He’s worked as a camera and Steadicam operator on numerous features, including FORREST GUMP, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, FIGHT CLUB, SILVER CITY, LIFE AS A HOUSE, THE TWO JAKES, COPYCAT, DANGEROUS MINDS, and MIRACLE MILE.
Chris enhances his craft as a director of photography by working on independent features. In 2002, he won the top honor from the International Cinematographers Guild for the short film OLD LOVE, based on a story by Nobel winner Isaac Bashevis Singer; the film was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1999, LOLA and BILIDIKID was an Official Selection at the Berlinale. In 1994, his work as the DP on the live action short, ON HOPE, was nominated for an Academy Award. Other notable features include THE KISS, THE BREED, and TRUE CRIME, along with his first feature, THE SERPENT’S TALE, which won the Critic’s Prize at the Istanbul Film Festival.
He continues to work as a camera operator, Steadicam operator, and director of photography in features and television. He’s presently working on WITHOUT A TRACE.
